Come make some sweet and joyful noise!
Sing the inspiring songs called the Spirituals, written by the community of Black people who were enslaved in the southern US.
Songs of joy, hope, determination and liberation – and they are timeless and timely.
These songs also carried encoded knowledge to help people escape on the Underground Railroad… as far North as Owen Sound and Grey County. So these are songs that bridge time and space!

To learn the songs, I will lead Song Circle workshops at the Harmony Centre:
Saturday July 20 – 10 to Noon (Studio 1)
then Wednesdays July 24 and 31 (6:30 to 8:30pm)
and then we will share our voices and bring the songs to The Emancipation Festival, at their Sunday Gospel event. Sunday August 4.
(starts at noon at Grey Roots)

Each Song Circle starts with a good warmup and then we dive into singing together.
No sight-reading is needed, it’s all by Call and Response – using your ears.
We learn the songs, and find harmonies – and every time we sing these songs we discover something new.
All are welcome. Wear comfy clothes, and bring some water.
Cost: sliding scale, suggested $15/session.

*Note that the first Song Circle is on Saturday morning, followed by two Wednesday evening sessions.
